I've been scouring the web for people's opinions on the best translations of the greatest epics: Homer's Odyssey, Homer's Iliad, Virgil's Aeneid, and Dante's Divina Commedia. The Iliad (Homer, translation Robert Fagles). Yes, I will absolutely be reading the Odyssey, but not right now — I started on Proust, which will be part of my study program this year, and it's way too demanding to read at the same time as Homer. There are many translations of all these poems and quite a few of them are good; I like Robert Fitzgerald's translations of the Iliad, Odyssey and Aeneid. Lawrence's prose, translation of The Odyssey. After reading a number of translations of The Odyssey in college, I definitely fell in love with Fagles. One final note, I'm not one that huge on poetry, and the Fagles translation of The Odyssey is definitely in that format. �That is nothing, nothing beside your agony”. I feel like he truly "gets" how Homer and other bards would have told this story. I spent much more time especially a reader taking on these books by choice not by the madate of a professsor. The events of The Odyssey are supposed to occur twenty years after the events of The Iliad. Did you read it after the Iliad? For Ovid, you might want to take a look at the Melville translation. After his bestselling success with the Iliad and the Odyssey, Robert Fagles released his verse translation of the Aeneid in 2006. My suggestion would be to read the Fagles translations first and then go back and read other translations, including Fitzgerald's later on. Fagles, the Arthur Marks '19 Professor of Comparative Literature Emeritus at Princeton University, was widely acclaimed for his popular translations of Homer's "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey," both of which became best-sellers. As with Homer, finding the right translation of the Aeneid is essential to enjoying it. Given that criteria, I like Fagles' translation of The Iliad best of the half-dozen I've read, and have to call a draw between Fitzgerald's verse, and T.E.
